DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF MILNE BAY
On the South Eastern peninsula of the Papua New Guinea mainland lies Milne Bay Province - 16,000 Km2 of mountainous coastal land, and gateway to more than 600 islands. Home to 200,000 people, Milne Bay is a melting pot of many mainland and island cultures.
Milne Bay is also blessed with a landscape of mountains, jungles, waterfalls, caves, hot springs, mud pools, and extinct volcanoes so visitors can enjoy a wide range of natural attractions.
These itineraries are our suggestions, but can be customized to suit the number of days you wish to stay.
All tours generate income for the Milne Bay community through site fees, guiding fees and meal preparation.
Tour Suggestions
Tour 1: Island Adventure Tours
Cruise in comfort on 'MV Alice in Wonderland' - half-day and full-day island and reef sight-seeing trips. Simply cruise on our unique glass-bottom boat viewing an exotic underwater world and enjoy the beauty of nature on the historic Samarai Island and the scenic China Straits Islands.
Tour 2: Alotau Highlights
The 'Highlights' of Alotau introduces visitors to the town and its immediate surrounds, providing an insight to the area's cultural, historical and natural attributes. Experience Milne Bay hospitality and sample local delicacies in a lovely village setting just out of the town boundaries.
Tour 3: Milne Bay Military Museum
The Milne Bay Military Museum is a World War 2 museum showcasing artifacts from the World War 2 between the Allied forces and the Japanese forces. It has been conceived with support from the Milne Bay Military Museum, Toowoomba, Queensland Australia.
Tour 4: Milne Bay War History Trail
A three-hour escorted vehicle tour. Join us on a trail of discovery as we show relics that have only recently been uncovered, and learn about the Battle that was a turning point in the Pacific War in 1942.
Tour 5: Bat Cave Expedition
Just 20Km from the town lies an extensive unchartered cave system which is home to thousands of bats. With local guides you can venture into the large caverns, through tunnels and across underground streams.
Tour 6: Bird Watching Trek
Around Milne Bay are many of the 700 bird species that can be found in Papua New Guinea. If you enjoy a walk through lush vegetation and wish to get back with nature for a couple of hours, this is for you.
Tour 7: Alotau to East Cape
A two-hour drive from Alotau, around the coastline past local villages, along the Owen Stanley Ranges and into grassy land littered with Pandanus palms lies East Cape - the most Easterly point of PNG.
Tour 8: Waga Waga Adventure
Waga Waga is a pretty and popular picnic site with clear waters and a black sand beach which glistnes with fools gold. Come and snorkel over the sunken Muscoota, and see the lovely sealife and coral.
Tour 9: Island Tour
This tour is taken by boat to the islands of Samarai and Kwato. Samarai the "Pearl of the Pacific" was the Provincial capital until 1968. Kwato is a small unique island set in the China Strait and is located on one of the oldest trade routes in the Pacific.
Tour 10: Doini Island Retreat
For a truly secluded island escape, spend one night or more at the nearby Doini Island. Choose between an escorted camping trip or go on your own, and we'll pick you up when you've completely unwound.
Tour 11: Bushwalking
For those who wish to get back to nature and enjoy our local Flora, choose one of our many bush tracks to take as a leisurely stroll or as a personal fitness walk and see our beautiful Province in its natural state. Alotau has many walking tracks, with different levels of difficulty, and they will take you along rivers, through rich vegetation or village gardens.
